Mt. Zion, Illinois Area Information

Mt. Zion, or Mount Zion, just touches the edge of Lake Decatur, and is bordered by Long Creek to the northeast, Hervey City and Dalton City to the south, and Elwin to the west. Running through Mt. Zion is Illinois Route 121 (IL 121), which will connect you to Dalton City in the south, and merges into Route 36 in the north. It's about a 15-minute drive to Decatur from Mt. Zion.

With a commute time of just under an hour to reach the city of Springfield, Mt. Zion appeals to those who are looking for small-town life—and the friendly community that comes with it.

Despite its size, there’s much to do in and around the area of Mt. Zion, especially for those who love the outdoors. This village is home to Spitler Woods State Natural Area and Fletcher Park, two green spaces that are great for walking the dog, or spending time with friends and family.

Many of Mt. Zion’s shops and restaurants are located along IL 121. These (primarily) small local businesses and restaurants offer a wide variety of options for every taste and need.

The following attractions are also nearby: Fort Daniel Conservation Area, Sand Creek Conservation Area, Scovill Zoo, Kaufman Lakeside Conservation Area, and more. Golfers will also enjoy living within the Mt. Zion area, as it is just a short drive away to Red Tail Run Golf Course and the South Side Country Club. Decatur Airport is also just 10-minutes from the heart of Mt. Zion.

Appealing particularly to families are the beautiful single-family homes for sale in Mt. Zion. Although home style and design varies slightly, typically you’ll find both Bungalows and multi-story homes in this area—although traditional Bungalows are the most popular choice.

Lot size also ranges between properties, with some homes having quite a bit of acreage. Once again, this also varies, but one defining feature of the homes in Mt. Zion is the emphasis on nature and landscaping. The residential streets in Mt. Zion are often lined with beautiful, mature trees. As well, many have chosen to plant and/or maintain the large trees in their front and back yards, sometimes even hiding the home from street view. The community's efforts to preserve the natural features have resulted in neighborhoods that feel warm and welcoming.

Some homes in Mt. Zion do have backyard pools—which is sure to turn your backyard into an oasis during the height of summer! If you're searching for a beautiful property surrounded by trees, with ample back yard space, Mt. Zion might just be the place to start your search!

Mt. Zion, Illinois History
